ATINS’s Certification Paths for Translators

 

Step 1: Become a Candidate for Certification Translator

Path 1:  Apply based on credentials and experience (with $100 non-refundable application review fee)

• ˜Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in translation for the language combination for which you are applying.
• • Submit a notarized true photocopy of the original diploma.
  • If the degree is from an educational institution outside of Canada, submit an official transcript in English or in French, of all courses completed or a certified translation of a transcript officially issued in a language other than English or French.

OR

• ˜Two years’ experience over the past five years in the language combination for which you are applying. Two years’ experience is deemed to consist in the translation of:

• 220,000 words in either of the official languages
• 160,000 words in Spanish
• 60,000 words in other languages

This experience must be attested to by invoices, contracts and/or letters from employers or clients.
Translation of official documents such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, etc. is always excluded.

AND

• ˜Read and sign the ATINS Code of Ethics
• ˜Optional: Have passed a written language proficiency test in English or in French, depending on the language combination in question.
• ˜Optional: An entrance exam may be administered to evaluate your translation skills at the discretion of the Board and the Admissions Committee.

AND

• ˜Pay the Candidate for Certification yearly membership fee of $110.

Path 2: Transfer from a Canadian sister association (with $100 non-refundable application review fee)

• ˜Be an associate member or a candidate for certification in good standing of another CTTIC member association as a translator in the same language combination for which you are applying, attested to by an official letter from that sister association.

AND

• ˜Read and sign the ATINS Code of Ethics

AND

• ˜Pay the Candidate for Certification yearly membership fee of $110.

 

Step 2: Become a Certified Translator

Candidates for Certification have 5 years to achieve certification. Afterwards, they will need to reapply.

Path 1: Take the on-line certification exam for $450

• ˜Become a Candidate for Certification with ATINS.

AND

• ˜If you hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in translation in the language combination for which you are applying, you must also have one year of full-time experience in translation over the past five years in the language combination for which you are applying. One years’ experience is deemed to consist in the translation of:
• • 110,000 words in either of the official languages,
  • 80,000 words in Spanish, or
  • 30,000 words in other languages,

This experience must be attested to by invoices, contracts and/or letters from employers or clients.
Translation of official documents such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, etc. is always excluded.

OR

• ˜If you DO NOT hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in translation in the language combination for which you are applying, you must have four years of full-time experience in translation over the past five years in the language combination for which you are applying. Four years’ experience is deemed to consist in the translation of:
• 440,000 words in either of the official languages,
• 320,000 words in Spanish, or
• 120,000 words in other languages,

This experience must be attested to by invoices, contracts and/or letters from employers or clients.
Translation of official documents such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, etc. is always excluded.

AND

• Pass the CTTIC examination.

 

Path 2: Apply on dossier for $700

• ˜Become a Candidate for Certification with ATINS.

AND

• ˜Have five years of full-time experience over the past five years in the language combination for which you are applying. Depending on the language combination, three years’ experience is deemed to consist in the translation of:
• • 550,000 words in either of the official languages,
  • 400,000 words in Spanish, or
  • 150,000 words in other languages,

attested to by invoices, contracts, and/or letters from employers or clients.

AND

• ˜Submit ten translations of at least 500 words each, which you have not had revised by a third party along with their source texts.
• • For each translation, include a letter written by the one who has mandated the translation attesting that you are the author of the translation.
  • The texts must be substantial, varied and representative of professional experience.
  • The texts cannot be official documents (e.g. birth certificates, driver’s licences, diplomas, etc.)

AND

• ˜Submit the names and contact information of three professional references who can attest to the general quality of your work. These names can be the same as those who attest to your translations required in the previous point.

AND

• ˜Submit the names of two sponsors who are certified translators in the language combination for which you are applying, and who can attest to the quality of your work. These names must be different than the names of your professional references.

AND

• ˜Pay the Certified Member yearly membership fee of $140.

 

Path 3: Transfer from a Canadian sister association (with $100 non-refundable application review fee)

• ˜Be a certified member in good standing of another CTTIC member association as a translator in the same language combination for which you are applying, attested to by an official letter from that sister association.

AND

• ˜Read and sign the ATINS Code of Ethics.

AND

• Pay the Certified Member yearly membership fee of $140.

 

 

ATINS’s Certification Paths for Interpreters

Step 1: Become a Candidate for Certification Interpreter

Path 1: Apply based on credentials and experience (with $100 non-refundable application review fee)

CONFERENCE INTERPRETERS

• Hold a university degree in conference interpreting that is recognized by the association.

OR

• ˜Have successfully completed a university or post-graduate program in conference interpreting recognized by the association.

OR

• ˜Must be able to substantiate 100 days of experience as a conference interpreter, at least 50 days in each active language [A,B] they are requesting and at least 30 days from each passive language [C] they are requesting, within the last five years;

COURT INTERPRETERS

• Hold a university degree in court interpreting that is recognized by the association or have successfully completed a course in court interpreting recognized by the association.

OR

• ˜Be accredited as a court interpreter by a certifying body recognized by the association, and submit proof of 300 hours of experience as a court interpreter, within the last five years.

OR

• ˜Be able to substantiate 600 hours of experience as a court interpreter in Canada, within the last five years.

COMMUNITY INTERPRETERS

• Hold a university degree in community interpreting that is recognized by the association or have successfully completed a post-secondary program in community interpreting recognized by the association.

OR

• ˜Be accredited as a community interpreter by a certifying body recognized by the association, and submit proof of 300 hours of experience as a community interpreter, within the last five years.

OR

• ˜Be able to substantiate 600 hours of experience as a community interpreter in Canada, within the last five years.

MEDICAL INTERPRETERS

• ˜Hold a university degree in medical interpreting that is recognized by the association or have successfully completed a post-secondary program in medical interpreting recognized by the association.

 OR

• ˜Be accredited as a medical interpreter by a certifying body recognized by the association, and submit proof of 300 hours of experience as a medical interpreter, within the last five years.

OR

• ˜Be be able to substantiate 600 hours of experience as a medical interpreter in Canada, within the last five years.

AND FOR EVERY INTERPRETER CATEGORY

• Read and sign the ATINS Code of Ethics.

AND

• ˜Pay the Candidate for Certification yearly membership fee of $110.

Path 2: Transfer from a Canadian sister association (with $100 non-refundable application review fee)

• Be an associate member or a candidate for certification in good standing of another CTTIC member association in the same interpreter category (conference, court, community, medical) and in the same language combination for which you are applying, attested to by an official letter from that sister association.

AND

• Read and sign the ATINS Code of Ethics.

AND

• ˜Pay the Candidate for Certification yearly membership fee of $110.

Step 2: Become a Certified Interpreter

Candidates for Certification have 5 years to achieve certification. Afterwards, they will need to reapply.

Path 1: Take the on-line certification exam (fees vary)

• ˜ Become a Candidate for Certification with ATINS.

AND

• ˜ Pass the certification exam.

AND

• ˜ Pay the Certified Member yearly membership fee of $140.

Path 2: Transfer from a Canadian sister association (with $100 non-refundable application review fee)

• Be a certified member in good standing of another CTTIC member association in the same interpreter category (conference, court, community, medical) and in the same language combination for which you are applying, attested to by an official letter from that sister association.

AND

• ˜ Read and sign the ATINS Code of Ethics.

AND

• ˜ Pay the Certified Member yearly membership fee of $140.
